ACH YEAR, GlobalShop's team
collectively asks the question:
"How can we better serve the
market?" Over the years, that
question has led us to many
initiatives, including futuristic
centerpieces, expansion into new categories of
exhibitors, increased relevant content in our
conference program and, yes, even an opening
night party. Through our exhibitor advocacy,
engaged trade partners and attendees that give
us feedback and insight, our show has continued to grow, which in turn allows us to better
serve the market the next year.
For all that we have accomplished, we believe that we have underserved a vital part of the
retailing world-the independent retailer. Even
though we have developed conference tracks targeted to the independent retailer and marketed to
that segment, we have not succeeded in serving
those that are considered independent (widely defined as one to 10 stores). In March 2014, we aim
to change that. Our Independent Retailer Experience will serve these retailers by introducing a
number of new elements to GlobalShop. Through a
new partnership with Retail Minded, a magazine,
conference and digital community that serves the
independent retailer, GlobalShop will reach out

new dimension to the GlobalShop experience,
an educational track will feature Rich Kizer and
Georganne Bender, retail strategists that focus
on indie retailers, and Nicole Leinbach Reyhle,
founder and publisher of Retail Minded, who was
recently named a Top 50 Retail Influencer.
In order to help the independent retailer
better "shop" the show and provide expert advice,
GlobalShop is calling on the design community to
provide a 20-minute consultation with independent retail attendees who wish to gain insights into
key design implementation. We also are calling on

our exhibitors to identify themselves as independent friendly, assuming that they are willing
and able to work with smaller-scale retailers.
Why are we doing this? First of all, we are not
fully serving the marketplace unless we serve
the entire marketplace. And while the vast
majority of our show's attendees are from
large-scale retail chains, let's not forget that
every retailer that became big started small.
Moreover, indie retailers have given inspiration
to us-not only to the producers and suppliers
of store design solutions, but also to the retail
design space. Let's face it, retail design is a completely open and transparent business, there
for all to see. And oftentimes, very small retailers make a very big impact on the market. Think
eyeglass retailer Warby Parker (five storefronts) and
tiny denim purveyor Hointer (two stores), innovators that have gotten unprecedented attention in
their channels.
So, while GlobalShop is committed to serving
our core audience of retail chains, we ask that you
join us in welcoming the independent retailers to
the 2014 event this coming March.
