My parents being adventurous risk takers, moved our family to Colorado in 1980, My first memory of design was doing pen and ink sketches of my elementary school when I was 10, which got printed on the front page of the local town rag. My parents should have known then! It could have also been the subscription to I left Colorado in 1995 and moved to Guam. This time, my parents moved there first to receive re-certification in scuba. I was called by the Ysrael family of Guam, a family of developers, to assist them with the project management of the 600-key Outrigger Guam Resort, a resort tower with a mixed-use base. I starting working on room schedules, vendor sourcing, and general administrative duties; a little over a month later the interior architect/designer left the project. I was then asked to reconstruct the interior project boards, full material and furniture specifications, procurement and shipping coordination. It all steam rolled ahead from there. I think the greatest lesson learned was not to be hesitant about the unknown, embrace what you do not know so it becomes something you are an expert or excel in. After the Outrigger project, I started my own development and design firm in Indonesia and Micronesia. This shift was very serendipitous for me, because through sheer luck I ran into the original interior architect/designer for the Outrigger, William Seidel, an ex-pat who was working with the original owners of Mandara Spa. William was instrumental in the conceptualization and design of the spa’s atmosphere and aesthetic and he needed local assistance because of his intense travel schedule. Now I had my first mentor in the industry and the experience was probably the most influential in solidifying my passion for hospitality design. Without William’s energy, full introduction to the design process, and general support, the path that I am on now would have never begun. Hospitality offers people the opportunity to experience lifestyles different from their everyday lives. To be able to expose people to creative and innovative design is probably one of the most satisfying feelings I get. I love a well-thought out and well-appointed powder room. Let me tell you, you can definitely pack a big punch into such a small space. I moved back to the states the summer of 2004 and started spending a good amount of time back in Aspen; I spent time up here in college. I was introduced to John Rowland and Sarah Broughton, who at the time were running a very efficient and successful architecture and design firm out of their residence. Sharing my past work and experiences in the industry with them, eventually led to many discussions of where they envisioned their firm’s place in the industry, how hospitality fit into the firm’s growth potential, and what I could personally bring to the firm. My most challenging and rewarding project is Aspen Square 410, a condo-hotel property. We were challenged to create a serene refuge from the seasonal bustle of Aspen, with enough concealed storage space for winter and summer sports gear and distinct areas for sleeping, living, and the kitchen, all within 498 square feet. Our clients, David and Sari Binder, an architect himself, had never worked with another architect on their personal residences. To be given such creative freedom by another architect was definitely an incredible experience. To be able to witness people interacting with, utilizing, and enjoying a space you were involved in creating has to be one of the most rewarding experiences in our industry. 132 hospitalitydesign www.hdmag.com
