By Tara Mastrelli Photography by Eric Laignel it’s a wrap Tradition and pop culture walk into a bar 250 hospitalitydesign For Tanuki Tavern, Jeffrey Chodrow’s Japanese gastropub and sushi bar in New York’s Meatpacking District, local firm Studio CMP combined rustic elements of traditional izakayas with Tokyo-style art and pop culture. “The scale of the restaurant wouldn’t allow us to recreate traditional Japanese, but when we had these two elements the design came really easily,” says CMP principal Charlotte Macaux Perelman. To work with the two-story, 2,800-square-foot space, the designers created distinct areas that “look in and onto each other,” says CMP principal Niels Guldager.
