5 questions for…
Mike Tiedy
Senior Vice President, Brand Design & Innovation Starwood Hotels & Resorts
Explain how each Starwood brand is translated into meeting space at your ofﬁce?
For the most part the of ce is just an open space, but we’ve created these three large meeting rooms where we took each of the brands and brought them to life. When we bring in owners, other design rms, or architects we want to expose them to the brand and our point of view on those brands, how it manifests itself in the 3D and graphic world.

How does your ofﬁce environment help to keep your design team inspired?
No.1, it starts with communication. Having the open space means you’re hearing what other people are working on, you’re seeing what they’re working on. We encourage a lot of interaction, so it allows people to jump in on a project and throw their opinion around. People are more open and sharing.

Has there been a partnership that’s been truly inspiring?
We have a partnership through the W brand with Designers of the Future and Design Miami, so we’ve tried to bring those designers into our of ce to present their latest work. We’ve also had them go and do some installations in some of the hotels, especially in Europe. And that’s been really successful and inspiring, you see these different designers really working on the edge of what’s possible. Not only will we hopefully collaborate with those designers on some of those projects we have going on, but also just to see what else they’re working on.

Where do you go for inspiration?
What’s been great about this business is because we’re so linked with so many other design rms, I’ve gotten to meet and know a lot of the designers in the world. And that communication has been probably the biggest inspiration. You start to see things that people are doing, and it’s across the board, it’s graphics, interior design, and architecture. And that network of people keeps you driving forward and keeps you inspired.

What are you currently excited about working on?
The W Leicester Square in London is really a fantastic property. You just feel like you’re right in the heartbeat of London. I also think our Le Meridien brand has hit its 5-year anniversary since Starwood took it over, and we’re starting to see that direction pay off. Even our brands like Sheraton and Westin over the last year and a half have had updates to their model room direction and we’re now looking at the public space areas, and the work that we’re doing on that is really starting to pull the brand together with a tighter story and a tighter look. It’s exciting to see that one vision, one voice come to life.
