western star Sophisticated simplicity in Oklahoma City By Michael Webb Photography by Scott McDonald of Hedrich Blessing For the second location of Café 501, located in a new retail center six miles north of downtown Oklahoma City, husband-and-wife duo Pete and Paris-trained chef Sheree Holloway wanted a space that not only honored the original restaurant, but also Sheree’s eclectic European menu. “We wanted this contemporary building to have the warmth and comfort of our old Café 501 in the suburb of Edmond [Oklahoma],” says Pete. “Casual by day and sophisticated at night, there’s lots of natural wood and [we were] trying to be as green as we could.” Elliott + Associates Architects designed the high-ceilinged pavilion of dark brick and steel with expansive glazing on the north side to pull in natural light and showcase the interior at night. Within, humble materials are lovingly crafted. The oriented strand board walls are stained to suggest grained marble and the pegboard ceilings have the look of leather. About 3,100 wood dowels are suspended from the ceiling to evoke the effect of fields of grain. Their polished tips create a constellation of reflected lights that augment the recessed pin spots mirrored in the 92 hospitalitydesign www.hospitalitydesign.comhttp://www.hospitalitydesign.com
