In November, Hospitality Design (HD) magazine launched its inaugural Industry Outlook Luncheon at the newly renovated Empire Room at the Waldorf=Astoria New York. Sponsored by Kohler, 200 industry professionals listened to global market development insights from Bruce Ford of Lodging Econometrics, and heard a panel of experts’ candid thoughts for 2012 and beyond, from the hotel, purchaser, and designer point of view. For the third year running, the Strelka Institute for Media, Architecture and Design in Moscow will present Summer at Strelka, in which the intimate courtyard plays host to lectures, conferences, master classes, as well as enriching screenings, concerts, and theater performances for more than three months. Not every design-savvy client has the deep pockets to create their dream space. Enter Studio. This new division of HBA International, based in New Delhi and Shanghai, embraces cutting-edge design while catering to smaller budgets. Led by design director Rahul Shankhwalker in New Delhi, and Allan Jenkins, most recently design director of HBA’s Hong Kong ofﬁce, in Shanghai, the company has been busy working on projects such as the futuristic Gateway, a 400-room convention hotel in Shahdara, India, and Lighthouse 13, an energetic lounge and restaurant set in a hip New Delhi shopping mall. Another noteworthy example is Zazen, a Pan-Asian restaurant in Panchkula, India, that according to Shankhwalker, found its inspiration from the soulful menu. “The design brief called for a restaurant whose calm environs would encourage guests to sit

Traditionally, Russians escape the cold by chatting and smoking in teplyaki—box-shaped, primitive winter structures—but in this exhibition, the warm portals are crafted from wooden planks and semi-opaque polyethylene. In between, an arti cial re of fabric, light, and warm air glows in the dark. Brodsky’s work has spawned the launch of the Chronology project, in which an architect, designer, or artist will be invited to Strelka each year to create a symbol of Russian winter in the courtyard. Meanwhile, Bar Strelka, the institute’s industrial-accented restaurant and cocktail lair, of course offers stylish shelter year-round.
