Industrial designer Maxim Maximov doesn’t remember deciding to become a designer; in fact, it seems the profession chose him. As a child, he chose painting over traditional toys, but when playtime did beckon, he would “alter toys before playing with them.” Maximov, a native of Oryol City, Russia, now lives in St. Petersburg, where he founded Maximovich Design in 2010, a ﬁrm that encompasses all elements of interior design, but focuses on lighting and furniture: “[They are] in my opinion the most important elements of a space,” he explains. Now, his sleek, quirky, and versatile designs are drawing attention from all over the world. His most well known piece is a task light called Sixties, inspired by 1960s designers like Dieter Rams and made with plastic to resemble a pipe or bendy straw. Then there’s his One Line furniture collection designed for public spaces, which won an award at Perm Design Development Center’s design competition in Russia. All the pieces in One Line are made from a single continuous sheet of curved or bent metal, softened by thick cushions in any color or style. Maximov is now working on a seainspired series of modern metal lamps, including his ﬁrst piece, S1+, made for M-house restaurant, a St. Petersburg establishment expected to be complete early this year. “I’m trying to transform the form of a sea creature into a useful object for life, in this case, a light,” he explains. “I wanted to demonstrate my interpretation of the sea creature rather than its actual form.” The constant human interaction and communication involved in his work is what really excites Maximov. “Every part of my job is my favorite part,” he says. “I like the process of creation, creating the actual from a prototype. I like design because it’s possible to depart from the whole world to stop and dream, and then realize those dreams.” www.maximovich-design.com
