Those inspirations are illustrated most clearly in the custom-designed furniture used throughout the 533-key hotel. “Our takeaway was the rounded corners and tapered bo oms of those iconic Jacobsen and Saarinen pieces,” Suomi says. “It shows up in a hand-carved solid wood stool we use in the bathrooms, and in a lounge chair that we’ve put in many of the guestrooms.” The design team also explored various stages of the milling process and expressed them in the lobby seating. Resembling a giant log, some pieces are squared o , and there is a railing surround that is an abstraction of the way timber is stacked as it’s cured. A Virginia Mist granite hearth acts as a striking centerpiece for the lobby, especially since it’s bracketed by two piles of sawed logs that reach to the ceiling. In the restaurant, Prairie Kitchen & Bar, allusions to milling continue in the form of three pulley-hung light xtures that suggest beltdriven machinery and threshers. Cra , too, became important. Each room also includes an image of Swedish-born actress Ingrid Bergman—a nod to the area’s Scandinavian heritage—rendered in 3M masking tape. “All of the art had to be made by local artists or use local materials,” explains Suomi. “And it all had to relate back to the concepts we’d established for the hotel.” Expect more of the same for the future, as Hya expands the property in a second $25 million phase that transforms another part of the building into an additional 140 guestrooms and a new two-story ballroom. hd
