Uncharacteristically, Brazilian designer
Marcio Kogan only contributed to the
interiors at L’And. “Because the building was
already there, we tried to respect the preexisting spatial qualities and the architects’
work as a whole while attempting to create
a feeling which fit well with the place,” says
Kogan. The resulting PROMONTORIOKogan product is a masterful PortugueseBrazilian blend, employing materials from
both lands, where the warm, yet luxuriously
understated interiors contrast the striking
modern exterior.
The 22 expansive suites are outfitted with
Portuguese eucalyptus paneling and natural
slate flooring tiles. A mammoth slate tub
dares guests to fill it in the bathroom, which
opens onto a private veranda surrounding
a plunge pool. Hard angles are softened
by traditional wool carpets and throws
featuring Alentejo shepherd patterns.
Clean-lined furniture by Portuguese
designer João Serôdio completes the design,
and a three-foot-long section of Brazilian
cumaru tree makes for a stunning coffee
table in the aptly named Sky suites, where
guests can sleep under the stars thanks to
retractable skylights.
In the restaurant, guests take in views
of hilly village Montemor-o-Novo, framed
by a 14-foot-long window. Above diners,
Tom Dixon lamps in copper, brass, and steel
shimmer at staggered heights, mimicking
the glittering cosmos just outside. Sipping
cocktails is relaxing in the spacious,
1970s-inspired bar where Vladimir Kagan
Ondine chairs and a Nakashima Conoid
bench and table snuggle up to a long, gas
fireplace.
“We wanted to have authentic pieces,
things that would provide a soul,” Kogan
says of the bar. “Local vintage furniture
comes with its own history and dialogues
with the new.” hd
