Jeff Proctor, Manufacturer’s Representative Charlie Taublieb, Taublieb Consulting Presenting the winners of the 33rd annual Impressions Awards competition f rom a sandwich dangling in mid-air to a spooky clown coming out of a screen printing press, the 2011 Impressions Awards competition offered an array of unique and eye-catching designs from all of the apparel decorating processes. Judged this past October at the Fort Worth Imprinted Sportswear Shows (ISS), the awards are our annual showcase of the industry’s best designs from decorators of all sizes and experience levels. We were surprised to see the increased number of ﬁrst-time shops entering last year, with some of them being start-up operations that received honors in the competition. The creative drive of the decorators who entered — combined with the array of categories for the different processes — means everyone had a shot at winning. We also were glad to see so many different techniques used — from bling, specialty threads and discharge ink to the return of ﬂocking. Last year’s entries also presented a solid showing of good, old-fashioned production designs that incorporated excellent printing and embroidery/digitizing techniques to please any customer. Good artwork is key here, with precise printing and embroidery execution making for designs that deﬁnitely caught the judges’ eyes. Winning an Impressions Award is just the beginning for the designs featured in this article. In addition to coverage in this month’s print, digital and mobile app editions, we’ll showcase all of the winners at every ISS event this year — in seven different regions of the country. The Impressions booth always is abuzz at these events, with attendees checking out the awards display to get their own creative juices ﬂowing. Additionally, we’ll be presenting the 2011 winners in our Impressions Awards & Design Galleries on our website, impressionsmag.com, throughout 2012. These online galleries are updated weekly — each Tuesday — with new designs. And once the winners have been uploaded, we’ll present additional Impressions Awards entries in the galleries starting this spring. This is an opportunity for great designs that did not make it to the winners’ podium in this year’s competition to get much-deserved kudos for hard work and excellent design execution. It’s never too early to start thinking about this year’s competition, as we take entries throughout the year.
