first impressions We Look Good For 35! n 1977, the “T-shirt business” was a disjointed collection of beach kiosks, enthusiasts and screen printers servicing team markets, to name a few. They were all real businesses, just not connected in any way to an industry with formal organization or a name. As the industry exploded — namely with the development of heat transfer and screen printing technologies — Impressions magazine was launched to give this marketplace a true voice and act as an educational resource to take the industry to new levels. Impressions’ founders deemed this the imprinted sportswear industry and launched our partner event, the Imprinted Sportswear Shows (ISS), a year later. It’s hard to believe that the magazine is marking its 35th anniversary in 2012, particularly when I reflect on how far this industry has come in the 24 years that I’ve been fortunate enough to be a part of it. To kick off year 35 of being the industry’s leading magazine, we’re debuting a fresh look and some new content. I’d like to express a big thanks to Impressions’ Art Director Wendi Van Eldik, who gave the familiar pages of the magazine an updated design. Her upgrades make for a sleek and sophisticated read. It’s the same great features, how-to columns and departments you rely on each month, just updated with a contemporary, new look. Also, you’ll note that we’ve changed the name of our “Hands-On” columns to Talking Shop, with each focusing on a specific decorating discipline. It’s still the same great writers — and some new ones — who share their expert insights from the front lines. The contributing writers of these columns are literally talking shop. Finally, you’ll see the Shop Spotlight on Choke Shirts on page 52. We’ve heard your feedback that reading other apparel decorators’ stories is inspiring, so we’re including Shop Spotlights in every issue this year. Read them to learn about your peers’ challenges and successes in this ever-changing entrepreneurial industry.
