have a lot of respect for entrepreneurs. It takes an
admirable amount of intestinal fortitude to be willing to put everything — money, possessions, peace of
mind, even family and friends — on the line to establish an
enterprise with the hope that it pays off, fi nancially or otherwise, in the long run.
While establishing a business isn’t exactly a leap of blind

faith — research must be done, a sound business plan must
be formulated and capital must be accrued — let’s be real about it. Even when all the
prerequisites have been attained, there still is an element of the unknown that can
be considered strong enough to dissuade some would-be business owners from realizing their dreams. Some may ask, “What if no one buys my product?” Others may
second-guess, “Is this idea really good enough to sustain itself over the long haul?”
Over time, doubt becomes risk.
But it’s entrepreneurs who build businesses around their passions that are more
likely to surmount these perceived obstacles. They see it as doing something they
care about and believe in while coincidentally earning pay. The old adage, “If you
do something you love, you’ll never work a day in your life,” certainly applies.
This characterization certainly fits Joëlle Krummenacher, who launched a
Switzerland-based company, Spirit Fever, attempting to merge her two passions:
cheerleading and computer science. What started as a project developing computer
games has morphed into a full-blown, multi-pronged business that includes spiritwear. Her company may not be the biggest, but the fact that she’s doing something
she loves gives her great satisfaction — plus she’s making money in the process.
Those are the rewards.
I’m not saying business owners should eschew profitability just to pursue a glorified hobby for free. But you’re more likely to succeed in the business world if you’re
doing something in which you truly believe. Read more about Krummenacher and
her business on p. 12, and ask yourself if you’re still passionate about your business.
Hopefully, the answer is “yes” and you’re just as excited as you were on Day 1 to see
exactly where your passion will take you next.
