The words, no matter how evocatively composed, and the images, no matter how thoughtfully shot, fail to communicate the who and how of a product’s life. Granted, these less publicized aspects count little in an editor’s day-to-day but when you encounter them face-to-face, as I did in Kohler, WI, the experience can be quite stirring. I am referring to a factory tour I took last month as part of the Kohler Editors Conference. Our guide was a spry and witty 50+-year company veteran who entertained us with his vast knowledge about Kohler, its products and their manufacture. As we followed him from one facility to the next—sometimes breathing hard to keep up—he sprinkled his erudition with stories of his own time working at the company. In fact, of all the tales he shared, none was more memorable than his description of his first experience enameling a hot, glowing-red cast iron tub:“When I enameled my first tub, I thought I would die,” he said.“When I enameled my second tub, I wish I had.” I can’t even begin to imagine. The conference offered many other highlights, including the unveiling of a new (and spectacular) Mick De Giulio kitchen vignette, discussions of industry trends and issues, a visit to a new LEED Gold office building and, of course, Moxie. What is Moxie, you ask? It’s a showerhead (above) with an integrated speaker that can stream music wirelessly from a mobile device. Attached by a strong magnet, it can also be dislodged and used as a portable speaker. Fun, hip and innovative, it is all the more remarkable because it comes from a company that will celebrate its 140th anniversary next year and shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon. So allow me a moment of subjectivity as I tip my hat—or should I say pen?—to Kohler and, more importantly, to those who may never appear in the pages of a magazine but whose labor is no less significant.
