products Electronically Secure New systems allow for advanced data reporting and reduced costs By Erika Schnitzer, Associate Editor Access control in multifamily communities is perhaps one of the biggest concerns for property managers and residents alike. Electronic systems that report who has access to the building and to which units, and at what time, can go a long way toward alleviating residents’ safety concerns and keeping track of employees and outside vendors, as well as deterring theft. In today’s tech-savvy world, security is almost entirely electronic, providing a more streamlined approach to access control and data reporting, as well as reducing costs for re-keying and key replacement. In fact one day mechanical keys may become obsolete. An alternative to employee ID badges and PIN numbers, the reader is designed to prevent employees from forwarding personal information, thereby maintaining a trail of who has access to keys. The reader can also be used as a timestamp for employee clock-in (www.handytrac.com)… Multifamily 360 from Network Multifamily [2] is a wireless monitored alarm system adapted for a variety of telecommunications platforms, including landlines, cell phones and VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol). The system monitors all units, including those that are unoccupied, as well as the entire property, and property management software controls and tracks access. (www.networkmultifamily.com)… Kwikset’s SmartCode Signature Series [3] is a keyless entry deadbolt featuring a touchpad design. Available in Polished Brass, Venetian Bronze (pictured) and Satin Nickel, the system allows property owners and managers to create two access codes—one for everyday use and one for temporary access. Powered by batteries, it features a motorized deadbolt for onetouch locking and a backlit keyboard for night access. The system fits all standard doors and passes the ANSI Grade 1 lock-picking standard (www.kwikset.com)… Saflok’s InSync series [4] is driven by SAM (Security Access Manager) RF (radio frequency) software, a Windows-based program used to encode information onto the RF key. A code is programmed onto the key, making it a communication credential that carries information to the lock, which responds by reading the access information and operating accordingly. Unit locks store audit trails of up to 200 entries, while common access locks can store up to 2,000 entries (www.kabamultihousing.com)… Schlage’s Programmable Electronic Deadbolt [5] is a computer-managed locking system that eliminates deadbolt replacement and re-keying costs with its Web-based database, which provides reports of dates and times of apartment access, as well as graphs of maintenance staff and vendor productivity. Reporting an audit trail of up to 1,000 events, the battery-powered lock is available in a variety of finishes, including Bright Brass, Antique Brass (pictured), Oil-Rubbed Bronze, Satin Nickel, Antique Pewter, Bright Chrome, Satin Chrome and Aged Bronze (www.schlage.com).
