Just Dive In Social media is here to stay—connect with MHN on LinkedIn and Facebook Google is my “go to” research tool. I use it daily on the job—and then when I go home in the evening. Google is how I found a recipe for Mango Lassi, my favorite Indian restaurant beverage, and it also led me to the Facebook page of a long-lost high school friend. This discovery, in turn, led to my signing up for Facebook. In the meantime, I received invitations from colleagues and industry friends to connect on LinkedIn… so I signed up there, too. Not too long after that, we realized MHN would be needing a social media presence of its own. And now it has one. On behalf of all the MHN editors, it’s my pleasure to invite you to join us on LinkedIn and Facebook for special news items and discussion groups. Weigh in on these topics or start a conversation of your own. The interactive nature of social media opens up interesting new ways for editors to identify content ideas. For instance, I saw an item posted on a LinkedIn finance discussion group by an Orlando developer looking to incorporate urban farming into mixed-use development with a multifamily component. Some months ago, before Michelle Obama drew attention to the idea by planting a vegetable garden at the White House, this topic had been touched on briefly by MHN magazine and we were planning on researching it further. LinkedIn provided an easy way to get in touch with an urban farmer/developer and this quickly led to an interview with our Online Editor Anuradha Kher. He told us that he’ll use his parcels for farming until the time is right to build, at which point the agriculture component will shrink; however, he maintains that any new development committed to sustainability and reducing its carbon footprint (which is just one benefit; read the story at www.multi-housingnews.com/urbanfarms) should also include urban agriculture. In the May issue of MHN magazine, Contributing Editor Christopher Hosford explores the impact of social media on apartment companies (Tech Trends, page 23). “Residents are sharing their views about where they live on social media sites like Facebook, Twitter and Digg—and property managers are having to learn how to cope with the results,” says Hosford. Especially in a tough economy, renters are in a strong negotiating position and you want to hear what they’re saying. Management companies need to assign a social media manager and respond to comments in a constructive way. Take part in the conversation; it’s happening with or without you. Social media is here to stay. MULTI-HOUSING NEWS MHN GROUP PUBLISHER & SHOW DIRECTOR Daniel J. He was incorrectly identified as Executive Officer in the April issue (“Facing the Affordable Housing Challenge”). In the April issue of MHN (“Green Condo Rises in Downtown Austin”), we incorrectly stated that The Austonian, a 178-unit residential and retail project, would add 25,000 new residents to the city. In fact, Austin city leaders have set the goal of adding 25,000 new residents to downtown Austin over a 10-year period. The Austonian is one part of this initiative.
