Perspectives Call ’Em As We See ’Em The 25 Most Powerful list begins with oil, which is, hands down, the most powerful factor in meeting planning today. Escalating prices at home—and the weak dollar abroad—have resulted in not only less global reliance on traveling Americans, but less prominence for U.S. trade shows in the global marketplace and more efforts into established and emerging markets elsewhere. As Martin Sirk, CEO of the International Congress & Convention Association, and one of our 25 Most Powerful, put it, “The playing field has been flattened forever. Emerging destinations have, in many cases, leapfrogged established countries in technological terms and quality of venues. Capital investment is pouring into China, India, and the [Persian] Gulf region.” Sirk shares our list with fellow internationalists Paul Kennedy, of Reed Travel Exhibitions; Ray Bloom, of the IMEX trade show; and Bruce MacMillan, of Meeting Professionals International. From adversity comes opportunity. The two CVB heads on our list—Las Vegas’ Rossi Ralenkotter and Orlando’s Gary Sain, are meeting today’s challenges with ever-newer venues and creative strategies. But the largest number of our 25 Most Powerful have made their names working toward a green future that does not rely on oil—and oil’s baggage. Baggage like global warming. Rayna Katz’s cover story on how Midwest flooding destroyed unique venues in the Heartland brings home the Terri Hardin, tragic toll of disrespecting Mother Earth. Editor-In-Chief In fact, we’ve taken a page from the environmental playbook. In this issue, we introduce our new department, Green Beat, which features news on the steps hotels, venues, and people are taking to make the world less carbon-centric. As Peter Huggins, planner for Washington, DC-based American Chemical Society, who now rides a bike to work instead of driving, put it, “How am I doing? Not spending $4.15 a gallon to commute to work is how I’m doing.” r Editorial J u l y 2 1 , 2 0 0 8 Vo l u m e 3 2 , N u m b e r 1 3 Corporate/Sales Nella Veldran, Vice President Travel Group Phone: (646) 654-7325 Editor-In-Chief, Terri Hardin (646) 654-7364;
