People Making News HOWARD KARAWAN Chief Operating Officer Fontainebleau Resorts Hopping over from Kerzner International, where he was president of destinations resorts and instrumental in the rise of the Atlantis resort in the Bahamas, Karawan goes to Fontainebleau at just the right time. It is in the middle of two major resort projects: Fontainebleau Miami Beach has a $1-billion renovation in the ofﬁng by summer 2008, and Fontainebleau Las Vegas is slated to launch fall 2009. SIMON BRADLEY Executive Vice President, Americas VisitBritain The British are coming. Previously in Stockholm as VisitBritain’s manager for the Nordic region, Bradley is now trumpeting the benefits of England, Scotland, and Wales from his New York City office. He is also coordinating VisitBritain’s Stateside offices in Los Angeles and Chicago, as well as the agency’s outposts in Toronto and Sao Paulo. GILLIAN MURPHY Senior VP, GM MGM at Foxwoods Prominent gaming hospitality veteran Gillian Murphy will steward Foxwoods Resort Casino’s $700-million MGM at Foxwoods expansion. Previously at Ameristar Casino Black Hawk, in Black Hawk, CO, Murphy will work to ensure that the new casino complex, with 825 rooms and 115,000 sf of meeting space, will make a smooth debut in May 2008. Murphy brings 20 years of experience to the Mashantucket, CT, resort. She was vice president of corporate hotel operations in Las Vegas for Harrah’s Entertainment for three years. In 2006, she was named executive of the year by the Nevada Tourism Alliance. EDGAR LOZOYA General Manager Hilton Sedona Resort & Spa It’s back in the Southwest for Lozoya, who studied at the University of Texas in Houston and began his 21-year hospitality career in Dallas before heading to Puerto Rico, where he was the general manager of two Embassy Suites properties for ﬁve years. Lozoya now oversees the daily operations of the 219-room resort, amid Arizona’s beautiful red rocks. CINDY MARTIN General Manager Northwest Point Resort The resort’s parent, PWP Hospitality, has tapped Martin to head its newest property, in Providenciales, Turks and Caicos. Martin, now directing the beachfront resort’s dayto-day affairs, was general manager of Brittain Rental Managment Company in Myrtle Beach, SC, where she also worked for several resorts on the Grand Strand. ALAN SHUKOVSKY Director, Social Catering Waldorf=Astoria The landmark New York City property, always busy with high-profile galas, as well as largescale corporate events, now has a shipshape social catering department with Alan Shukovsky at the helm. Shukovsky served in the U.S. Navy for five years, patrolling the Persian Gulf and elsewhere, before discovering a passion for the catering business. He began his career at New York City hotels and restaurants and went on to open IACCcertified conference center The Palace at Somerset Park, in Somerset Park, NJ, as director of catering. Shukovsky is no stranger to high-profile venues: He was the director of catering for trendy eateries Buddakan and Morimoto in NYC. MICHAEL MIHALOW Director of F&B Massachusetts Convention Center Authority The MCCA’s naming of Mihalow as F&B director means he’ll be in charge of the culinary experience at the Boston Convention & Exhibition Center, as well as the John B. Hynes Center. Mihalow has been responsible for the F&B experience at numerous hotels around the country, including the Sheraton Boston, Intercontinental Mark Hopkins in San Francisco, the Lodge at Vail in Colorado, and the Hyatt Regency in Austin, TX. SCOTT OBLEY Director of Group Sales Wailea Beach Marriott Resort & Spa Obley has been promoted to group sales director at the 546-room resort in Maui, HI. Described as “well-deserving” of the position, Obley served three years as senior account executive in the property’s sales department. Between his time with the Wailea Beach Marriott and the Grand Wailea Resort Hotel & Spa, also in Maui, Obley was national sales manager at Steamboat Grand Resort Hotel in Steamboat Springs, CO.
