Lack of snowfall in the mountains is threatening the water supplies of nearby Las Vegas, as well as Colorado, Utah, Wyoming, New Mexico, Arizona, and California. Also reported by the Times, falling water levels in the Great Lakes are wreaking havoc on the shipping industry there. The problem is due to low rainfall, mild winters, and resultant high evaporation due to lack of ice cover, say researchers. “We have to realize that, until we get relief, the situation is impacting our choice of venues,” said Cynthia Alford, managing director of Destination South Meetings & Events, in Atlanta. Alford, who also is current president of Meeting Professionals International’s big Georgia chapter (950 members), said a favorite event location, Atlanta’s Centennial Olympic Park, is being avoided because of the lack of drinking water and the danger of puncturing its irrigation system. The American Society of Hematology is one of many groups with scheduled Atlanta events this winter. Its annual meeting in early December is expected to draw —Atlanta CVB 21,000 attendees and exhibitors to 46 hotels in the city and to the Georgia International Convention Center. Ayuko Kimura-Fay,the group’s director of meetings, has been communicating with the CVB and her hotels and advising her attendees to observe all conservation advice. Her big receptions, she said, were set to switch to disposable cups and plates to save on wash water, and she planned to purchase bottled water. “Our attendees are physicians, and they are more than happy to do whatever it takes to conserve,” she said. Kimura-Fay admitted she was concerned the water would simply run out, but she had no plans of canceling the meeting. The Omni Hotel’s Jurcak has fielded plenty of calls from meeting planners, but says he’s had no cancellations. And, he noted that his nearly full facility is brimming with plenty of good cheer if not water. “We had a little rain last week and had some guests caught outside in it,” he said.“They were saying, ‘Hey, you need it.
