There was an interesting article on punctuality on Wall Street Journal Online that made me think about on-time performance and how tardiness impacts meetings. I’m curious how planners deal with the chronically late. In the article, one interviewee said that he tried to start meetings on time in an effort to punish the late. Yet, when the latecomers arrived, those in attendance provided Cliffs Notes versions of what was covered. So it’s actually a reward—the person gets extra time to do whatever and gets a recap of the meeting, without the tangents, hemming and hawing, and other time-wasters that creep into most meetings. How do you ensure people arrive on time to your meetings? Respond to Kinley’s blog at meetingnews.com/soapbox0002 Other cities build convention centers. Jackson’s building an entire convention district. With the 74,000-square-foot Mississippi TelCom Center now going strong in downtown Jackson, and the rest of the new Jackson Convention Complex set to open in early 2009, Jackson offers over 264,500 square feet of state-of-the-art conference and meeting space to host practically any event imaginable. Within the Convention District, you’ll also find plenty to keep delegates entertained, including the Mississippi Museum of Art, Davis Planetarium, Thalia Mara Hall for the Performing Arts, the nearby Fondren Renaissance District, live music, fine hotels, great restaurants, and more. And when you meet here, you’ll experience the hospitality that makes people want to come back time and time again.
