The comprehensive and challenging hospitality management courses offered by universities are important to professional development, as well as stepping-stones to a great future. But what’s also important—what provides the polish to that professionalism—is on-the-job training. Because after all, meeting that first client, or planning that first conference, is only way to take charge of all the theoretical knowledge you’ve been handed. Thus, in this issue, we celebrate the accomplishments of next-gen meetings and hospitality professionals. In People Making News, we feature the latest Certified Meeting Professional (CMP) graduates, while in Chef Talk, we ask chef Megan Barnes-Reichman how an MBA and cooking on a yacht have shaped her success. And on page 12, we highlight “The Ones to Terri Hardin, Watch: Thirty Under 30” individuals who are Editor-In-Chief receiving recognition during what has become an increasingly difficult time. Speaking of difficult times, the AIG Effect continues to be an ill wind blowing no good. So far this year, 132 have canceled meetings and incentive trips to Hawaii. In our cover story, “Hawaii Speaks,” the third in our “The Industry Strikes Back” series, the islands’ hospitallity industry addresses this impact. And something else is difficult, too: saying goodbye. This is my last issue of MeetingNews.
