Dateline: Texas The Texas Hill Country Is Alive With Resort Renovations The soft rolling terrain of the Texas Hill Country, which lies minutes outside San Antonio, was once the territory of far-ranging cattle ranches. Now, it is home to wildlife refuges and several destination resorts. The most well-known of these, the 508room Westin La Cantera Resort, takes its name from a nearby rock quarry, is steeped in ranchero heritage. All meeting rooms and dining venues bear the name of local legends. La Cantera will celebrate its 10th anniversary this month, having concluded a $10 million general renovation that was completed with the recent refreshment of the Casita Village wing’s 38 suites. The property originally was developed as part of a master plan, and shares a footprint with Six Flags San Antonio and the luxury Shops at La Cantera. Last June, Westin San Antonio’s Hyatt Regency Hill Country Resort and Spa added a new pavilion in January. La Cantera’s golf course moved up to number 19 from 41st on Conde Nast Traveler’s list of the top-ranked golf resorts.
