NEWH - April 2005 - (Page 19)
2005 leadership conference
by Nancy K. Bohnett
On behalf of those who attended
the 2005 Leadership Conference, I
would like to share with the NEWH
Leadership Committee and Laura
Nankin what a wonderful opportunity you provided us. Everything
was outstanding, including the
speakers, goodie bags, corporate
partners, special events, networking, committee brainstorming and
finale featuring Lyndall De Marco,
our 2005 Woman of the Year, sharing the common vision with us all.
As we checked into the Biltmore
Embassy Hotel in Phoenix, we were
welcomed by beautiful goodie
bags supplied by Pam Tallarita &
Richloom Fabric Corp., which were
filled with many great products
from many generous hospitality
Canadian and US suppliers, and
proceeded to a wonderful reception hosted by the NEWH Arizona
chapter.
In the morning our president,
Jeanne Varney, and international
board members welcomed us. Our
first speaker, Wade Younger,
encouraged team building with tips
to become more productive and
motivated. I believe all welcomed
secrets to running successful meet-

ings and becoming a stronger team
leader.
Our next speaker, John Horton,
really turned the volume and everyone’s energy up! He broke us into
four groups in his first session,
bringing out our “behavioral style.”
All groups shared interactive comments, only to realize the importance of knowing oneself and
knowing others. John opened
another door for us in his next session on maximizing
creativity in the workplace. He stressed that
creativity is the key to
operational excellence.
That evening Trevira
and Precision Fabrics
sponsored a beautiful
dinner and wonderful
presentation, followed
by a piano sing-a-long
with Ed Biggs of
Milliken Carpets, a
NEWH corporate
partner.
Gerry Poster of Masland Carpets
Gerry Poster also
taught us about our natural feelings
and the unnatural acts that influence others. Gerry has authored
many books on understanding
motivation, how to listen, how to
process information, decision making and organizing communication
strategy. As the session came to a
close, we all felt that our behavior,
values and communication strategies are open to change. Masland
carpet sponsored Gerry, and
allowed us all to go home with various books that Gerry has written.
Many thanks!
The remainder of training included
two brainstorming sessions, which
ended with an overview from all
committees to better chapters’
awareness of each board member’s
continued contributions.
A presentation featuring the ongoing efforts of NEWH and its members was wonderfully executed and
received, followed by a morning
with our Woman of the Year,
Lyndall De Marco. All in attendance
that morning could not be more
proud of the NEWH selection.
