During the IH/M & RS show in New York, I had the pleasure of meeting Anna Perryman our
ICON Award Recipient for year 2004. Anna’s speech was something we wanted to share, but
her spirit and commitment to the industry has been something we can all learn from…
Good morning everyone,
When you give philanthropically, you are
investing in the future, and taking a risk
that the future could either be brighter or
more dull because of it. Patti, you had to
ask yourself how my receiving this scholarship could honor your father, and if it
would compel me in these formative years
of my life to proceed with his values of
determination and passion that characterized him throughout his life.

Those values have spoken to us even when
Mr. Durkan himself cannot. His entrepreneurial courage and spirit to overcome are why we remember
him today. I want to assure you those values will not escape me
when I encounter the internal and external demands we must all
endure. I began to realize that if my work will outlast the force of
our culture and the entropy that denies so many artisans a legacy
when they have passed I must capture his daring constantly, and
live with that ideal regardless of cost.
All of us know we never outlast the mark we leave on our community. And nothing is as present or rele vant as the community
we live in and among, or those we carve out with our work. I suspect that is why many of us are in this field. We are drawn to
innovation. We want to shape the way people live.
That shared passion is why I am here today, with a blade in my
hand, to carve out a future for myself in a field that is surrounded
both with a great cloud of witnesses who have gone ahead of us,
and an audience before me who have nobly contributed to the
art form I am staking my future on.
Finally, I am grateful for the lasting impression Mr. Durkan has
made to this community. To his gracious daughter who has
shared his legacy with me. To NEWH for their careful selection of
my essay among a tremendous collection of quality works. And
to their continued support of my future success.
I would also like to congratulate the recipients of the Gold Key
awards. Today, I celebrate your brilliance, and I aspire one day to
collaborate with you for many future honors. Thank you and
good day.

May from Harrington Institute of Interior Design.
