In its first year, NEWH Sustainable Hospitality asked
interior design students attending accredited programs
across the country to design a timeshare unit utilizing
the very best sustainable products, technologies, and
construction practices.

Designtex, which is dedicated to supporting students
who aspire to advance in sustainable design, has
partnered with JLF/Lone Meadow, a longtime customer
and manufacturer of sustainable custom seating for the
contract market, to provide the award for NEWH’s
Sustainable Hospitality Scholarship Competition.
Stacey Schield, an interior design major with a focus
in hospitality at the University of Cincinnati, conceived
a timeshare located in Sedona, Arizona, utilizing
several of Designtex’s sustainable textiles throughout
the space. Cascadia (Eco Intelligent® Polyester),
Appleseed (100 percent post-industrial recycled polyester
with NANO-TEX™ Resists Spills), Singing in the
Rain (100 percent recycled polyester with NANOTEX™
Resists Spills), and Alkai (Zeftron Contex
Solution-Dyed Nylon with NANO-TEX™ Resists
Spills) were used for upholstery for large furniture
pieces as well as small colorful decorative accents. “It
was exciting to pick from the list of products that
Designtex offers because I had a choice of textiles that
were not only sustainable but also beautifully
designed,” says Schield. “The Designtex patterns were
perfect for what I wanted to achieve. The colors—reds,
browns, and neutrals—were ideal for a Sedona setting.”
“It’s clear that sustainability has been a long-time
priority for Designtex,” says David Codoluto, the company’s
division sales manager. “The focus on

sustainability within the hospitality market, however,
is increasing rapidly. NEWH’s Sustainable Hospitality
Scholarship Competition is a great opportunity to
support young designers and encourage them to
promote eco-friendly design in this sector.”
Schield added, “I am very honored and have learned
so much from the process. As students, we take classes
that address sustainability, but until you work on a
project, you don’t realize the challenges that you face.
As designers, we are all faced with the choice of what
to offer our clients. I sincerely believe that if we select
products that are sustainable and work with the earth
instead of harming it, we are doing the right thing for
our clients in the long run.”
A lounge chair Schield designed for the
competition, upholstered in Designtex’s Appleseed
textile, was produced by Lone Meadow and displayed
at the JLF/Lone Meadow booth at HD 2007 Expo and
Conference. Designtex’s award of $5,000 went to
the University of Cincinnati’s Interior Design program
while JLF/Lone Meadow awarded $5,000 to Schield.
New England Affiliate Hosts
“Is Sustainable Attainable” Event
Green design draws us all in these days and New
England’s May event was no exception—participants
came from all areas to join in on a highly educational
and motivational seminar “Is Sustainable Attainable?”
given by David Mahood of Olive Designs as well as a
member of the NEWH sustainable team. Hosted by
Boston Light Source, Innovations, Milliken Carpet,
Designtex, JLF/Lone Meadow, and Spec Trim—each
company brought their most environmentally friendly
products—the event was not only a great educational
event but also a great networking event.
