Atlantic City Affiliate In June, a year after forming and leading the NEWH Atlantic City Affiliate, Georgene Pijut (Fiber Consultant for INVISTA, manufacturer of Antron® nylon) has handed the reins of this emerging chapter into the hands of Lee Brotsker. Lee is president L.B. DESIGNS. LLC, an Atlantic City-based hospitality design and purchasing company, which he started in 1984. Chicago The community service committee had the initial meeting of volunteers for phase II of the Extreme Makeover project commenced last year at Gilda’s Club. In terms of programming, on August 16, members enjoyed a guided tour by TVS of its recent $30 million renovation of the Hyatt O’Hare’s public and commercial space. Point, Click and Bid: NEWH extends its annual HD Expo and Conference Silent Auction online For the first time, NEWH extended its annual Hospitality Design (HD) Expo and Conference Silent Auction online. “We had a handful of items that didn’t get any bids at HD, so we wanted to offer the pieces that were left to a more broader audience, says Diane ” Federwitz, membership/events coordinator for NEWH. In fact, anyone—not just NEWH members—were able to bid on the 12 items included in the auction, which started at the end of June and ended on July 31. Even though this was a trial run (a successful one at that with 10 items receiving bids totaling $2,140), NEWH hopes to make the Online Auction a quarterly event. As an incentive, companies that donate product will receive an ad on NEWH website’s homepage for 30 days—a $300 value. NEWH will also place a full-page ad in this magazine and send out reminder email blasts. July’s participants were Baci by Remcraft; Designtex; Down Etc.; Eaton Fine Art; GRT Glass Design; Just a Cover; Kichler Lighting; Lite Source; Townsend Leather; and ULSTER. “We are grateful to our friends in the industry, from the vendors to the auction bidders, ” says Cynthia Guthrie, director of fundraising for NEWH and president of her namesake firm. “Your contributions help to raise money for the mission of scholarships and education. ” 6 september 2007 www.newh.org tel 800.593.NEWH NEWH Breaks Ground with its Sustainable Directory By Glenn Hasek of Green Lodging News “Two years ago, NEWH recognized the need to get involved in sustainability, says Jillian Van ” Dresser, principal, the Van Dresser Co. and NEWH Sustainability Committee’s sustainability adviser. “We identified several initiatives, the first of which is a resource directory. ” Now available on the organization’s website, the NEWH Sustainable Directory includes a list of vendors committed to environmental responsibility in areas such as recycling, resource efficiency, indoor air quality, green cleaning, sustainable design, and community involvement. Leading the development of the directory were Sharry Cooper, Architectural Alliance, Minneapolis, and David Mahood, Olive Designs, Greensboro. Participants are asked to complete an application that includes an environmental ethics statement and several pages of “check box” questions. The directory is divided into four categories: hotel/restaurant owners and operators; manufacturers; service providers (architecture, interior design, and procurement); and general (applicable to all categories). NEWH offers a basic listing free to all companies who want to share their involvement in sustainable efforts.
