news newh/chapter Changing of the Guard Four questions for NEWH’s new president, Helen Reed, owner of HL Reed Design and h2h, inc., a restaurant procurement company. How does it feel to be the new president? Why was it important to you to take on this position? I am honored and excited to take on the position. I have been very involved with the organization in the last several years and it has been inspiring to watch it unfold to be the best organization in the hospitality industry. What is it about NEWH that you love? Hospitality? There are many valuable aspects of NEWH that I love, though the networking has been one of the top items on the list. I have met so many people internationally that have become lifelong friends and business associates. If I had not become so active in NEWH, this would never have happened. Equally, the scholarships have been so rewarding. Meeting the students that have received the scholarships and knowing that we have made their life easier and made a difference has been important. I will never forget the first time I heard a student speak at a NEWH Leadership Conference a few years ago, it was an incredible, emotional, and proud feeling to know that I was involved with such a great organization. What do you hope to do this year with NEWH? What are your goals? I, with the executive committee, will be working together to continually promote all of the benefits of NEWH that you have as a member or a corporate partner. One of my main goals is keeping communication open and working with all levels of membership and with the chapters to help the organization to continue to grow. Any areas you will be focusing on? Sustainability in the hospitality industry, as well as the marketing of NEWH. Chapter News Las Vegas The chapter will host its HOSPY Gala on November 7th at Encore. Following a juried review, the best in hospitality projects in Las Vegas and from Las Vegas firms will be announced, and Dick Rizzo of Perini Building Company will be honored for his leadership and community outreach. The HOSPY Awards banquet is the main fundraising event for the chapter. Los Angeles Founding The chapter will host a tour of the newly opened Terranea Hotel and Resort in Rancho Palos Verdes, California, on November 12th. Wendy Haase, the hotel’s director of public relations, will lead the tour from 5:30 to 7:30 pm. The chapter also hosted its first regional trade show last month with 109 exhibitors and 300 attendees, and chapter president 4 november 2009 www.newh.org tel 800.593.NEWH Mark Huntsinger appointed Aileen Canta as public relations director. Toronto The chapter has hosted many successful events from sundowners at the CN Tower to tours of the Art Gallery in Ontario. A highlight was the annual fundraising golf tournament, which attracted 110 golfers, 12 spa-goers, and 152 for dinner. In terms of scholarship, the chapter is starting an annual $1,500 endowment to a third-year student at Ryerson College based on his/her hospitality project part of the college’s curriculum. To raise the money, members will pay $250 to speak to third-year students about their products for 45 minutes; there will be six of these meet and greets over the year. Upcoming events include a back of house tour and round table event at the Royal York Hotel on November 12th as well as a December 16th Sundowner at the famous Lobby Restaurant with a Christmas walk. UK In July, 31 members and guests enjoyed afternoon tea and a tour at Firmdale’s Number Sixteen hotel. In October, the chapter held its annual general meeting at the Desso showroom, and held an organized walk in historic Clerkenwell. On November 3rd, Ulster Carpet, in conjunction with the chapter, hosted a cocktail reception during this year’s Sleep Event with guest speaker Henry Garthwaite from the Carbon Trust award. The next event, a pre-Christmas gathering, will be held in December. In terms of scholarships, the chapter has a new relationship with the Royal College of Art, and has awarded endowments to outstanding work at this year’s graduate shows. http://www.newh.org
