tradeshows regional Head to Orlando NEWH’s Leadership Conference 2011, “Catch the Wave,” will be held Thursday, January 13-16th at the Loews Royal Pacific Resort at Universal Studios in Orlando. In addition, the NEWH Orlando Regional Tradeshow will be held on the 13th from Noon till 6:00 p.m. The Leadership Conference will officially begin that evening as the Sunshine Chapter hosts the traditional Welcome Party. There will be brainstorming sessions, expert presentations, thoughtful discussions, mentoring, student and professional recognition, exclusive industry knowledge, membership building ideas, and plenty of opportunity for close networking in a friendly, relaxed business setting. Early registration discounts apply. For more information or to register go to NEWH.org>Leadership> Leadership Conference or contact Jena Seibel at 866.935.6394, jena.seibel@newh.org. Community Outreach T he 2010 NEWH Regional Tradeshows have been a huge success. More than 400 attendees and 100 exhibitors attended Atlanta’s in January; 149 exhibitors and 380 attendees turned out for Washington, DC’s in March; and in July, Denver had 78 exhibitors and 201 attendees, as well as 14 students showcasing their work. In June, New York’s first-ever event featured 152 exhibitors and 301 attendees from a slew of top firms and hotel companies including BBGM, Costas Kondylis Design, Champalimaud, Gensler, Gettys, HLW, Lawrence Associates, Mark Zeff, Morgans Hotel Group, Rockwell Group, Starwood Hotels & Resorts, Tihany Design, and Wilson Associates. George Scammell of Wyndham even brought his entire team. “The intimate and informal size was good to catch up with the vendors present,” says Bill Rooney, president of Bill Rooney Studio. “For a first time show I think the attendance was steady and on par with a lot of other first timers. The beauty of New York is the size and quality of the design firms we are attracting, just one of those firms could bring in more business for a manufacturer than 10 smaller firms in a smaller city,” says Julia Davis, president of Design Overstock and NEWH’s vice president of events, mentioning that they may reformat the timing of the New York tradeshow to better fit the community. Davis adds that while no chapter will get a tradeshow every year or is guaranteed a slot in the lineup, NEWH encourages all chapters who have had a successful show and are interested in hosting another to submit a proposal on when and why and how the chapter thinks they can improve the next tradeshow. NEWH plans a year and a half in advance and are already planning for 2012. Says Maya Romanoff’s director of sales, Tracy Sherman, “Overall I think the regional tradeshows are valuable and useful. You see some really good products and develop one-on-one time with designers.” Next up: Dallas in October.
