In December, they will host a one-day sustainable design conference and tabletop exhibition followed by a cocktail reception in Washington, DC. “HD and NEWH are the leading brands serving the hospitality design industry and dedicated to providing information and services for the advancement of sustainable design in hospitality. A partnership will enable both parties to broaden their scope and expand their position as the leading providers of content on the topic. By leveraging the strengths of our industry relationships, the event is poised to be the leading conference on sustainable design in hospitality,” says Michelle Finn, vice president of the HD Group, who is working on the event with David Mahood, NEWH’s VP Sustainable Hospitality, and Tara Mastrelli, HD’s managing editor. In addition, the two organizations are partnering to provide an accredited webinar series from the 2010 Hospitality Design Exposition & Conference (HD Expo), giving viewers an opportunity to earn continuing education credits and learn more on marketing design, economic outlook, and distressed hotels. And they have established a $5,000 John Lenaas Memorial HD Interior Design Scholarship Award in memory of HD’s longtime creative director who passed away in April. < Michelle Finn, vice president of the Hospitality Design (HD) Group, presents the John Lenaas Memorial HD Interior Design Scholarship Award to Galit Almog of FIT, at the HD Awards ceremony in June at the Hudson Theatre at the Millennium Broadway Hotel in New York. CHAPTER Atlantic City The chapter’s NEWH Product Runway Fundraiser event is now scheduled for October 7th at the Pool at Harrah’s in Atlantic City. There will be a cocktail hour, show, and awards where the chapter’s $1,000 inaugural scholarship will be awarded. Las Vegas The chapter held their annual scholarship reception at the World Market Center in April, awarding $30,000 to students in fields ranging from hospitality management to interior design and architecture. Renowned designer Roger Thomas served as the guest speaker and shared his knowledge of the hospitality industry as well as the advantages of being an NEWH member. A special thanks to the Roger Thomas Collection, Brad Friedmutter, Albie Colotto, and KHS & S Contracting for establishing new scholarships presented this year. North Central This past February, the chapter hosted its first Speed Mentoring event. More than 30 professionals and 30 students attended, representing the Art Institute, Brown College, Century College, Dakota County Technical College, Dunwoody College, University of Minnesota, and University of Wisconsin – Madison and Stout. No question was off limits and the students were able to bring anything from their resume to portfolio to review with their designated professionals, which turned out to be one-on-one time with four professionals in an hour. South Florida The 8th Annual Bubble Bash during Hospitality Design Boutique Exposition & Conference (HD Boutique), dubbed Puttin’ on the Ritz, will be held fittingly at the Ritz-Carlton South Beach on Tuesday, September 14th, from 8 p.m. till midnight. Winners of the SOFHIE Awards (SOuth Florida Hospitality Industry Excellence) will be announced in nine categories including Project of the Year. Moderated by Toby Schermerhorn, Cauhaus Design, and Bernard Holnaider, R.D. Jones and Associates, the panel included Donald Griner, Choice Hotels; Mark Carrier, B. F. Saul Company Hotel Division; Kathleen Matthews, Marriott International; Melinda Zanecki, Interstate Hotels & Resorts; and John Leary, Hilton Worldwide.
