Learning to Lead
There are a lot of exciting NEWH happenings in 2012, but mark your calendar for the 2013 NEWH Leadership Conference, January 25-26th at the Grand Hyatt Union Square in San Francisco. “We chose San Francisco partly because that is where NEWH’s mostrecently chartered chapter is located, and we wanted to show off the chapter and allow them an opportunity to show off for the rest of the organization,” explains Mark Huntsinger, NEWH Inc.’s director of leadership conferences. “They have done a phenomenal job in building a very vibrant and relevant chapter, and that is exciting to experience.” The two-day event will boast a variety of speakers, including keynoter Chip Conley, founder of Joie de Vivre Hospitality, now Commune Hotels & Resorts, who is also a well-respected speaker and author of PEAK Organizations and Transforming the Way Business Is Done. ❙❘❚
The tagline of the conference is Bridge to Success, linking the location with the event’s objective—to provide information, training, and networking to help attendees become more successful in their business. “The underlying theme is the ‘New Normal,’” says Huntsinger. “The business landscape has changed fundamentally; tomorrow’s environment will be different, but no less rich in possibilities for those who are prepared. Our objective is to help Mark your calendar! the attendees (and everyone in the organization) become better prepared NEWH Leadership Conference for the new normal.”

Around the Chapters
Arizona
The chapter held its yearly Christmas for the Troops Event in December. Organized by Kathy Griffiths, the chapter’s community service chair, many supported the cause through donations and volunteering, wrapping and packaging the gifts.
Las Vegas
On January 26th, the chapter held its annual board installation in downtown Las Vegas at Brett Wesley Gallery. This was the rst of a series of events under the umbrella of “Las Vegas Renaissance,” a theme that was conceived by president Rich Gesteland to celebrate the lead the hospitality industry is taking to lift the city out of the deep depression and unemployment it has experienced in recent years. The series of events will be held at various locations that have either opened or undergone major renovations since the economic collapse four years ago.
Atlantic City/Greater Philadelphia
In January, the chapter held its monthly Project Tour at SBRAGA in Philadelphia. Designed by AP3C Architects and Evolution Concepts, and helmed by Bravo’s Top Chef winner, Kevin Sbraga, the designers envisioned the atmosphere to be elegantly rustic and comfortable with modern touches.
New York
Enthusiasm continues to grow around the chapter. With a diverse and dedicated board, new initiatives are coming online every few weeks. The rst CEU will be held in March, Spark!, a format to showcase innovative speakers from outside the industry, launches in April, and June 22nd will mark the chapter’s greatest fundraising effort to date, with two events in one location—NEWH/Hospitality Design Owners’ Roundtable and the NEWH New York Regional Tradeshow, which will boast a local original graf ti artist performing live, and other moments to bring the city to the show oor. Stay tuned to the chapter’s inaugural newsletter or attend one of its popular Toasty Tuesday hotel design tours. ❙❘❚
Houston
On April 17th, the chapter will tour Local Foods, a new restaurant in the Rice University area, complete with a talk by the interior designer and chef. And since the restaurant’s claim to fame is the use of fresh ingredients grown in the Houston area, this will be a sustainable event for the chapter.
