The graduate winner is Nitya Krishnan, a student at New York School of Interior Design, for her Kranina Eco Resort. Her project, set in Thekkady, Kerala (India), was based on the spiritual connection and bond between guests and their surroundings. “The resort Kyi Gywa has been consciously designed to create harmony among the five human senses while traversing through a unique experience to attain serenity and pleasure,” her presentation states. Also part of the experience: providing unique activities for guests that link them to the area each time they visit the resort. “I believe in designing sustainable and holistic spaces,” she says. “Having three years of working experience in the hospitality sector, I have understood the importance of creating a synergy between sustainability and profitability,” she says. “I believe that as designers it is essential to provide our clients with good design, which are also profitable.”
Cooper’s theory of species, the lodge in Whitefish, Montana, is based off of the type III species, the most efficient of all, which represent a complex lifestyle filled with meaningful relationships and efficient use of resources. “I knew I wanted to encourage not only using sustainable products through my design, but living a sustainable lifestyle that would have a deeper impact on our environment as opposed to the short term benefits we so often think of when we hear ‘green design,’” says Swingley, currently the resource librarian at Wynn Design and Development. Both Krishnan and Swingley were honored at the 2012 Hospitality Design Exposition & Conference (HD Expo), during the Green Voice: NEWH Student Scholarship Awards Luncheon & Green Panel Discussion by the Experts.
Elizabeth Duncan
Kyi Gywa, a student at Savannah College of Art and Design was also honored at HD Expo, during the Platinum Circle Gala. She is the ICON of Industry Scholarship 2011 Honorable Mention recipient.
Meanwhile, NEWH is awarding the FR-One Fabricut Contract Scholarship to Elizabeth Duncan, a student at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, School of Architecture. Upon graduation, she intends on obtaining a master’s in architecture with the aspiration of working at a firm who pursues projects internationally. She says that will feed her “desire to travel and experience all the world has to offer.“ ❙❘❚
