Last year, Durkan was able to make some sizable investments into its manufacturing capabilities, and the company is seeing positive results now in 2012. Durkan’s new Spectronics 25X high definition printing system is a state-of-the-art machine that prints carpet at 25 dpi, which is 56 percent higher resolution than previously available. For CYP, recently expanded patterning capabilities and greatly increased capacity have resulted in the industry-leading ability to service clients. “With this exciting new technology, all of Durkan’s new print collections have been designed to take advantage of the new system,” says Lee Blair, SVP, global head of hospitality, Mohawk Industries. “More designs with complex detailing can now be offered.” At HD Expo, several new collections with the benefits of Spectronics were showcased, as well as the company’s first collections from Stacy Garcia— Wild Corners and Acid Hip—available for print and CYP. Also newly introduced is Mé lange for print and CYP from Virginia Langley, and Mad for Plaid and Loves Me, Loves Me Not from Oren Sherman. Says Blair: “For the last three years Durkan has partnered with NEWH to present the D*scover Design competition, open to student and professional members. In a recent ceremony at HD Expo, the 2012 winners and their designs were unveiled. Congratulations to Alexandra Pilgrim (professional category) and Lorin Bordeville (student category) for their excellent design work. Durkan will develop and market these designs, which will also be part of the NEWH Endow program. Durkan is a longtime supporter of NEWH and the excellent programs they offer, and looks forward continuing that support.”
At HD Expo in Las Vegas, Fabricut Contract launched a healthcare and senior living program. This extensive 600-SKU collection includes cubicle curtain, heat transfer print, Crypton upholstery, and Sta-Kleen dry-erase vinyl fabrics and is organized into four distinct sampling tools to provide a consistent, reliable package and a decorative appeal for the discerning healthcare clientele. At HD Boutique, the company also unveiled a collection with Roger Thomas for S. Harris Contract, which has been gaining a lot of traction. Harvey Nudelman, president of Fabricut Contract, admits that the company has done extremely well in the tough economy. But with that success comes its challenges: “We continue to introduce creative designs and innovative fabrics, and unfortunately, many times our designs and fabrics are knocked off by companies who are not willing to make the investment in design resources or sales resources.” As for NEWH, he says, “It’s important to support NEWH because we believe in the work that they do day in and day out. We support and are active in their scholarship initiatives, sustainable living program, and, of course, the extensive networking opportunities within the industry. NEWH is a force and forum for good things in our industry.”
Mandy Li Collection is introducing a new line of custom seating, adding to the company’s already extensive line of custom furniture. Additionally, Mandy Li has added colored MDF to its environmentally sustainable products line. Company-wise, “we are focusing on our efforts towards sustainability, customer brand loyalty, and industry involvement. Additionally, from a marketing standpoint, we have recently rebranded our company from GW Gallery to Mandy Li Collection,” explains president Mandy Li. The biggest challenge Li is seeing is in fulfilling clients’ visions, even on a tight budget. “But,” she says, “we’ve also taken this as an opportunity to provide real value, and to demonstrate strength in the place of a weakness. Anyone can make the dream come true on an unlimited budget and a wide-open timeframe. It takes a real commitment to the client’s vision to be able to deliver a product that exceeds expectations and yet is still respectful of the practical constraints.” As for NEWH, Li says: “We support NEWH because we believe that industry ties are as important as client relationships. We could stay in our business bubble and just handle ourselves and our immediate client needs, but business leaders have a responsibility to stay in touch with the direction of the wind, to keep peace with changing currents, and to contribute to the industry dialogue. In turn, NEWH has continued to open doors for our company that would have not been available to us if we had not become involved.”
