Rachel Brennan earns $10,000 NEWH Sustainable award

honors in the 2012-13
NEWH Sustainable Design
Competition for students.
Brennan won the
competition as a fi fth-year
design student at Virginia
Polytechnic Institute and
State University (Virginia
Tech) School of Architecture + Design in Blacksburg,
Virginia. NEWH awarded Brennan a $5,000 scholarship sponsored
by JLF/ lone meadow, and a $5,000 matching prize to the Virginia
Tech interior design program, sponsored by Valley Forge Fabrics.
Both awards were presented at the 2013 Hospitality Design
Exposition & Conference (HD Expo) in Las Vegas on May 15th.
Brennan, now working as a junior designer for a
multidisciplinary Washington, DC, design fi rm, understands the
potential of design to change lives and enrich experiences. Says
Brennan, “I am very passionate about design and love seeing how
much design truly touches every aspect of society.”
Her award marks the seventh annual prize in the NEWH
Sustainable Design Competition. NEWH provides students with
the opportunity to showcase their design skills while utilizing the
very best in sustainable design products and practices. Criteria
include site selection, water efficiency, energy conservation,
products/materials, and indoor environmental quality.

judges: Pamela Parsons, senior vice president of operations,
FORRESTPERKINS; Helen Reed, vice president of SEELogix;
and Karen Angotti, founder of KO Angotti. Thanks to NEWH
competition volunteers: Andrea Thomas, founder of Thomas
Design Source, currently overseeing the competition as NEWH
International Board of Directors vice president of education;
NEWH scholarship partner Susan Burnside, principal designer
at Toronto-area Burnside and Associates; NEWH Sustainable
Hospitality vice president Dina Belon, sustainability specialist
at the Peabody Orlando; and NEWH Sustainable Hospitality
immediate past vice president David Mahood, partner, Olive
