American Atelier
American Atelier is two months away from completing the guestroom furniture for the newly
constructed hotel on 1717 Broadway in New York. Explains Jim DeCamp, vice president of sales and
marketing: “This 70-story property will be the tallest single purpose hotel in the U.S.—floors six through 33 will be branded Marriott Courtyard and
the remaining floors up to the 70th floor will be a Marriott Residence Inn. The interiors were designed by Bill Rooney Studios and are a departure
from the Marriott standards programs.”
Sustainability was key for the project: all furniture and millwork was sent directly to the property to eliminate warehousing and double handling,
and the products were blanket-wrapped to eliminate all cartoning and trash. Explains DeCamp: “Since there were over 250 unique pieces for the
Courtyard rooms and over 200 unique pieces for the Residence Inn rooms every piece was labeled by room number to expedite installation. Our
approach to this project represents significant savings in fuel, reuse of packaging materials, and elimination of trash on site.”
NEWH is a platform for networking for American Atelier. “NEWH local chapter events provide our firm with the opportunity to connect with
each marketplace and allow us to meet with new people coming into that market,” says DeCamp. “We support NEWH as part of our ongoing
commitment to strengthen the domestic market by proving financial support to the new talent entering the market.”
Bernhardt Hospitality
Bernhardt Hospitality has recently completed custom furniture for several noteworthy projects: the
Alexander Hotel in the newly re-developed area of downtown Indianapolis; the historic Lancaster Hotel
in downtown Houston; and newly constructed Ritz-Carlton Aruba.
Besides custom products, the company is also committed to environmental excellence in all of its business activities. “As a family-owned and
operated company, we care a great deal about the health and welfare of our employees, our customers, our suppliers, our community, and our
planet,” says Bill Cotter, national sales manager, hospitality. “We have a long-standing corporate tradition of providing a safe and healthful work
place, protecting the environment, and conserving energy and natural resources. This tradition has served the environment and our business
well over the years and now provides the foundation for a comprehensive set of Environmental Policy Objectives—from waste reduction to supply
chain management.” As a result, Bernhardt received EFEC (enhancing Furniture’s Environmental Culture) certifications for five of its U.S. facilities.
NEWH is a vehicle for Bernhardt to tell its quality and experience story. Says Cotter: “First, it provides a forum and venue for us to interface with
the design community. Secondly, NEWH is providing terrific support in developing young designers and bringing them into our industry. This is
very important for our future. Finally, I believe the dialog that NEWH creates, supports, and facilitates within the design community, as well as the
supply community, helps to provide standards and direction for all of us.”
Electric Mirror
Earlier this year, Electric Mirror launched Vive, the first and only Bluetooth mirror, which transforms any of the
company’s products into a wireless stereo system. It’s the newest product the company makes in Seattle. As CEO
Jim Mischel says, “We believe our ‘Made-in-the-USA’ production is the best way to ensure top-quality construction
for every mirror we produce. The benefi ts of consistent quality, shorter lead times, and full control are exactly what
help us lead our industry.”
Another focus for Electric MIrror is sustainability, from its “Beautiful World” initiative (to produce the most energyefficient products) and maintenance free lamps that reduce landfill waste.
And the innovation is paying off. The company’s revenue is up dramatically versus last year. This is also in part to a rigorous focus on sales
and marketing. In March, Electric Mirror’s global sales meeting brought 50 reps to Seattle for a factory tour and updates on new products. “We
had a goal of bringing our sales reps up-to-speed on the growth of our company from new products to new personnel, and succeeded at it
marvelously,” says Mischel.
And NEWH is part of the company’s growth plan: “NEWH offers Electric Mirror a wonderful platform for business opportunity, networking, and
new innovative ideas,” he says. “We are grateful to support this organization and look forward to being part of the growth moving forward.”
Fabric Innovations
Fabric Innovations recently unveiled digitally printed fabrics. Says owner and president Deborah Herman:
“Designers can simply select a base fabric and send us an artwork file or an image for inspiration, and
we are then able to print that directly onto a variety of drapery and bedding fabrics. Witnessing how our
unique technology—which affords a much faster turnaround (two to four weeks)—is allowing designers
to have such creative freedom on everything from duvet covers to sheer fabrics and blackouts is really inspiring for us.”
Other company milestones include expanding internationally with mills in both Mexico and Brazil, completing the first of many projects in Brazil,
and launching a quilted product that in a duvet insert lasts 47 washes.
“This year has been an exciting time of growth for Fabric Innovations,” says Herman. “We have added to our sales team, our relationships with
our clients have strengthened, we are back at producing our core business of custom drapery fabrics and top of the bed products, and it just feels
like everything is falling into place.”
As a member of the founding chapter of NEWH some 30 years ago, Herman understands the importance of NEWH: “We believe it is important
to support NEWH to encourage and give opportunities to students that are joining us as the new generation of the hospitality industry.” To that end,
this year the company is launching the Fabric Innovations New York NEWH scholarship, which will be given out at Hospitality Design magazine’s
Platinum Circle gala, November 12th at the Conrad.
Hunter Douglas Hospitality
Hunter Douglas Hospitality (HDH) recently completed an installation at the Fiesta Inn Resort
in Tempe, Arizona, located near Taliesin West, the summer home, studio, and school of renowned architect Frank Lloyd Wright. The property,
which was originally built in the 1970s by a local architect who studied under Wright, underwent a complete renovation in 2013. The design of
the shades were inspired by a leaded glass skylight window from Frank Lloyd Wright’s primary residence in Oak Park, Illinois. Explains president
Jennifer Lamonte: “We worked directly with the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation to obtain the rights to reproduce this design. Because of the border
