Stonehill & Taylor crafts
a new boutique hotel for
the Garment District

C
harged with turning New York's Colony Arcade building,
fi rst built in 1912 as a millinery factory with a chic hat
shop and tea salon on the street level, into a new boutique
hotel that would enliven the Garment District, the design
team at locally based Stonehill & Taylor didn't have to look far
for inspiration. "When we were researching the history of the
building, we were struck by the contrast of the elegant ladies
who lunched on the street level and factory workers on the upper
floors, and this duality was a huge inspiration in our design,"
explains Stonehill & Taylor's principal in charge, Christina
Zimmer. "We designed the lobby area to have a highly tailored,
sophisticated look, whereas the guestrooms and the rooftop have
a more raw elegance. We wanted the hotel to feel authentic, as
if it had been there all along, but updated for the comfort and
needs of the contemporary guests."
