fabricators, and architect working together each day on-site. “I would bring drawings to the site, and a few days later they would start detailing right there,” Aidlin recalls. “It was like sculpting in real time in architecture.” With the renovation in place, the focus turned to furnishings and lighting, with a continued sense of teamwork along with a “reverence for creative activity and the power of art,” according to Aidlin. “I was dying to collaborate with nick [the glass sculptor nickolas Weinstein],” Aidlin says. Weinstein came up with several concepts, with the final version working best both aesthetically and for diffusing light. The innovative concrete banquettes—originally meant to be of steel—were a fortuitous shakeout of the financial model. given the high cost of steel, a concrete fabricator stepped into the collective to experiment with the less expensive Ductal concrete, creating improbably graceful seating. Aidlin says, “my favorite part about this project is how we were able to collaborate with artists and fabricators—I learned so much.” Concrete, used throughout the space, is part of Vogler’s vision to create a restaurant that will endure for many years—an unusual strategy in an industry that looks ahead a mere five to 10. It’s also an environmentally sustainable model: With locally sourced, recycled, and sustainable materials and processes, Bar Agricole is slated for LEED Platinum certification. —Jan Lakin
