BEHIND THE ILLUSTRATIONS

Alan G. Brake (Power tools) is currently midwest editor of The Architect’s Newspaper. He has been covering architecture and design for over a decade for such publications as Azure, Interior Design, Metropolis, and The New York Times. Alan has a master’s degree in architectural history from Yale university and is based in new York.

Bilyana Dimitrova (the inside Picture) is a new York city–based architectural photographer, a former photo editor at Metropolis, and author of To Each His Home. Her work has been featured in books as well as publications including Architectural Digest, Architectural Record, Interior Design, Interni, Metropolis, New York Magazine, and The New York Times.

Francesco Bongiorni (illustrations) is an illustrator based in Madrid. His clients include Businessweek, Harvard Business Review, The New York Times, The New Yorker, The Progressive, and Utne Reader, among others. A graduate of the new Academy of Fine Arts in Milan, Francesco also studied at the European institute of Design.

coming from a family of artists, architects, videographers, and set designers, Francesco is inspired by a variety of media, yet he has long admired the American tradition of illustration: “it’s like basketball, where players around the world dream of being in the nbA.” For a particular illustration, inspiration begins with an exhaustive image immersion. then small sketches help to determine composition. next, in a larger format, Francesco develops a few concepts by exploring styles as well as gestures of characters, since, he feels, a tiny change of a hand position can change an expression radically, altering the overall impact.

Jennifer K. Gorsche (open source) writes about products, digital fabrication, design, and architecture for consumer and trade publications. she is currently products editor at The Architect’s Newspaper and also edits Metals in Construction magazine. Previously she was editor of Concrete Homes and Texas Home & Living. Jennifer is based in Fort Worth.

Jan Lakin (retaking Place, Mythbusters, Design Decoded, and resources) Perspective’s editor in chief is a seasoned writer and editor for the design industry, contributing articles on art, design, and sustainability to Contract, Interior Design, and Urban Land as well as other trade publications. she is based in new York.

Julie Taraska (social network) is an editor, journalist, and social-media consultant. she writes about emerging designers, architecture, and culture for Details, Fast Company, Metropolis, Surface, and Wallpaper*. based in new York, she was the original editor of the Gilt Home for Gilt Groupe and is cohost of Product Placement, an educational talk series.
