MYtHbusters: CaN yOu BE aLL THINGS TO aLL KINDS Of CLIENTS?

interior designers are the ultimate hyphenates. We don’t just select finishes and draw furniture plans; we devise environmental graphics, consult on the finer points of workplace ergonomics, and become sociological experts on the micro cultures of our clients’ industries. the recession has made us even more inclined— and willing—to multitask, expanding our core skill set, flexing our creative muscles in attendant disciplines, and crossing over into genres outside our immediate expertise. contract specialists now design houses, retail firms have embraced hospitality…the list goes on. if you are a capable and creative professional, a quick learner, and have the right studio setup, you can be all things to all types of clients. Right? Maybe. there are the nottrivial matters of qualification and regulations to consider, the latter having become a hotbutton topic in light of the new legislation in Florida and california. Health, safety, and welfare issues need to factor into the equation, too. is there an argument for hiring the right professional for the right project? four designers discuss.
