DESIGNER BuD RODECKER ExpLaINS THE THINKING BEHIND THE ISSuE’S GRapHICS

the typecentric cover interacts with the Perspective logo, the upsidedown “e,” incorporating it into our tag line, the power of Design. the letters themselves, which seem to weave through the paper, riff on floorplans; look closely and you’ll see walls and doorways. the compositional spareness is a departure from our more densely illustrated recent issues.

primo orpilla’s firm name, o+A, is arrayed in a vertical arrang ement to look like a person standing up. “it’s what i would call a cheap trick: the old visual cliché of type as human form,” bud explains.

the article headline uses a custom typeface by 3st. Dubbed Garland, it’s an homage to one by renowned designer Ken Garland. the graphic illustrations float evocative words in front of a question mark (page 23) and, on the following spread, a dollar sign—“a subliminal message about what clients really want,” bud jokes.

For the headline, bud’s first instinct was to design an analyst’s couch that morphed into letters. but he abandoned that idea in favor of another psychological trope: a colorblindness test. At first glance, the illustration just looks like a cluster of circles; a few seconds later you notice that the dots spell out “design mind.” it’s a nod to the human tendency to seek order in chaos. on the following spread, bud augmented early20thcentury graphic artist A. M. cassandre’s iconic abstracted face with a brain “exploding” with creativity—i.e. traits common to interior designers.
MyTHBuSTERS, paGE 46
inspired by italian artist/designer bruno Munari’s article about cooking utensils, bud used silverware as a metaphor for multitasking. the opener’s full cutlery set is followed by a twoforone utensil, the spork. the last page bears a pair of chopsticks, a tool combining all functionalities. “it’s about reduction and moving from specialization to gener alization,” bud notes. the illustrations themselves also multitask as type, spelling out “mix.”
vIEWpOINTS, paGE 56
bud converted the choreography of that dreaded ’90s wedding dance, the electric slide, into the gestures of a hand swiping a smartphone screen.
