IIDA Perspective - Fall/Winter 2014 - 31
Epic's buildings are 100,000-square foot, threestory structures grouped into campuses of 5
buildings that share common courtyards, and are
connected by enclosed bridges or underground
tunnels, something staff are grateful for in the
heart of Wisconsin winter. Floor plans within each
building are tweaked to obscure the company's size
and promote a "human scale." There are no cubicle
farms. Hallways jog left or right after several
offices to shorten sight lines. Natural light brushes
most office windows.
Building interiors vary based on themes. There's
the Africa corridor, where eucalyptus woodwork
and safari knick-knacks line the walls. One major
thoroughfare recalls "Raiders of the Lost Arc",
complete with a holographic boulder that rolls
down the hallway. Strolling through these
whimsical spaces, it's easy enough to forget
that employees-not segregated by expertise,
Dickmann points out, but tossed in together
to encourage collaboration-are sculpting code
responsible for 40 million healthcare patients.
"Epic turns corporate interiors on their head," says
Cuningham Group founder John Cuningham.
"Rather than the predictable, they do the surprising.
It's fun and different-but it's also a smart
philosophy for a productive and collaborative work
environment."
Epic also seems attuned to the pull sustainability
and environmental consciousness can have on
recruiting young and tech-minded talent.
Thousands of geothermal wells heat and cool the
campus, making Epic among the largest private
owners of geothermal heating systems in the
country. Similarly tucked out of site and mind,
water flows downhill in what appears to be a
sylvan brook but is actually a system for recycling
stormwater, 100 percent of which is retained on site.
So far, Epic's plan to attract talent to their
Midwestern campus is working: they've already
filled the 1,000 additional offices they added with
the farm campus, and a new set of buildings
is in the works.
Designers Cuningham Group still meet regularly
with Dickmann, CEO Judith Faulkner and other
Epic employees to discuss design concerns.
Epic's playful interiors
feature passageways
straight out of movie-sets
and real-life tractors
parked in hallways.
