IIDA Perspective - Fall/Winter 2014 - 39

How important is a firm's reputation? Do you consider
proposals differently based on whether you know
the firm's work before looking at their qualifications?
Reputation obviously plays an important role in the review process as it helps
to understand a firm's aesthetic sensibilities and overall quality of work. And a firm's
reputation in the industry-especially in terms of how easy or difficult they are
to work with-speaks volumes in the process as well.

AS

It plays a factor in who gets the RFP in the first place. When you know a firm's
work it does make you look at their qualifications differently, in a good way.
You are able to understand what you are reading a bit differently if you have that
real knowledge.

LM

RA Knowing a firm's work and reputation is important, but the team assigned
on every project is the key. Since many of our requests for proposal are by invitation,
we know the firm, but the team (both design and sub-consultants) that is proposed
is what distinguishes the response. A thoughtful, comprehensive and targeted
combination of the right team members, specifically brought together for a
client's project.

Does a firm need to have experience in the exact project
type that they're proposing on? Is it advantageous for firms
to show some work that may not be directly applicable
but still shows design ingenuity? Do too many "outlier"
projects hurt a firm's overall chances?
Although there can be some easy blurring of lines between, say,
hospitality to residential, going from healthcare to hospitality may not work
out so smoothly. I think it never hurts to show cross platform work-but it has to be
shared thoughtfully.

AS

LM There are times that you do need a firm to have the exact experience you are
looking for to make a project successful. I am more willing to use a new firm
on a basic project, unless I have been completely hit with a "wow" during an
interview, or if there is a relationship with someone at that firm.
RA A firm that has experience and demonstrated capabilities in the project type
is well received. Including too many 'outlier' projects is always a gamble.
