COMPETITION ISSUE
At the time of publication of this issue, the annual rush to determine the "best of"
lists for 2014 has begun. The "most notable" books, the "most interesting" people,
the "number one" songs, albums, schools, athletes, automobiles, airlines, travel
destinations, restaurants, websites and dance moves. From pop to provocative,
these lists are both a snapshot of a moment in time and a cultural place holder.

A favorite list that provides some context for this issue of Perspective is the
annual review of the "words of the year." The 2014 lexicon includes: "metrics,"
"quiet," "authenticity," "experience," "believe-ability," "design thinking," "narrative,"
"resilience," "competition," and "relevance." While all of those words resonate for
designers and the practice of design, this issue highlights what keeps us competitive
and relevant. (By the way, the Oxford Dictionary Word of the Year is "vape,"
and this will be the only mention of it in this issue!)
From a focus on leveraging the power of "startup thinking" to a very apt article
on The Power of Narrative and how the expert use of words is as critical for designers
as the use of visuals, this issue offers some essential insight into how and why
design is a necessary business strategy. We have also captured the highlights
of a roundtable discussion about the relevance of the RFP process.

And finally, IIDA wants your input, as we add another member to the Perspective
family. A new publication focused on the next generation of designers will debut
in 2015. This digital magazine will examine industry ideas and the practice of design
from the point of view of the newest members of the design community: students
and professionals at the beginning of their design careers. It's a decidedly different
point of view, and we need a name for this new, younger sibling to Perspective.
So we're tapping into our best resource: the IIDA community. Contribute your ideas
to NameAMag@iida.org.
Best wishes to you for 2015. We look forward to bringing you another year of the most
essential thoughts, words and ideas that matter.
