What do you do to stay
competitive as a designer?

I set aside at least one hour a week to read the print copies of monthly design
magazines and business journals, to gather inspiration from different design
concepts, projected trends and lessons learned. I also appreciate great photography
that captures the detail, composition and proportion of a building, interior space or
object. It's all registered in my brain as a design reference. If I come across a company
or person of real intrigue, I'll go a step further and research them on the internet.

Whenever I travel for projects, I try to add an extra day or two to visit museums.
Looking at the world through the eyes of artists-a painter, sculptor, or artisan-
always gives me a richer, more grounded perspective on the place we are working.
And engaging with the issues and ideas that these creators wrestled with opens
my mind up to develop design concepts grounded in history and human emotion.

I prefer to explore areas outside of our direct industry, look at work at the fringes
of the world that influences us. Theater is becoming more and more interesting
to me... the control of light, sound, space and narrative comes together in very
interesting ways that resonate with design.

I like to read scientific periodicals; it keeps me up to speed with innovative
trending. Photography and travel are also great because they can make you see
things in a different light & spark a creative response.

In addition to design publications, I look at business publications and websites from
places like CB Richard Ellis, Deloitt, McKinsey and Harvard Business Review to
understand what's going on in the world at large. I also just attended Mohawk's FWD
two day event in NYC, which was great for design inspiration.

Taking drawing classes, collecting and tearing up design magazines from the 70's,
traveling, watching old movies with crazy set design, going to lectures at museums,
having sketching days around the city... pretty much anything that keeps me
