"Although we now celebrate this solid foundation
we have built during the past decade, it is the future
that is important-it is the future that holds our
vision of our profession and Association... As we
move into this next decade, we must identify and
explore the relevant issues that face us."
IIDA PRESIDENT LEWIS GOETZ, FIIDA, FAIA, 2004

In the twenty years since it was founded in 1994, IIDA has become an indispensable
resource to the profession of Interior Design. The organization has built a robust
network of design professionals, clients and manufacturers, developed a comprehensive Knowledge Center for its members, and advocated on behalf of the profession
to the public at large. Despite a global reach, at its core IIDA remains an organization
focused on people, and playing an active role in the continued success and
development of each of its 13,000 members.
At the center of the Association's mission is its commitment to moving the profession
forward, to staying ahead of the curve. IIDA wants to serve the current needs of its
members, while building an infrastructure that will serve the needs they'll have in
five or ten years. Perhaps no one understands the importance of that directive more
clearly than the men and women who have served as President of the IIDA
International Board of Directors. They have steered the organization through a web
of challenges, overseen its exponential growth, and maintained strategic goals
that go well beyond the purview of the organization.
As IIDA CEO Cheryl Durst says: "The person who sits in that seat is not just
representing the brand and the goals of the Association, but also the aspirations
of the profession of Interior Design."
Acting as IIDA President is a volunteer position, and the designers who've held the
role have come from a variety of backgrounds, from the largest firms in the world
to shops with no more than ten designers. Each faced unique challenges, from
volatile economic conditions to a rapidly changing workforce.
While celebrating the organization's tenth anniversary in 2004, IIDA President
Lewis Goetz emphasized the importance of performance metrics and integrating
sustainability more fully into the design process: "If we are to be taken seriously
we must raise our standards for the profession through education and testing; and
we must embrace the concept of knowledge-based design and sustainability in our
approach." But Goetz also emphasized the importance of anticipating where the
profession was going, and charged the IIDA membership to "identify and explore
the relevant issues that face us."
Those issues remain central for the profession and the Association. Outgoing
President Felice Silverman, FIIDA, says the role of IIDA is more critical now than
ever, as the organization responds to "the changing economy, globalization, and
resulting evolution of the design industries." And, Durst notes, acting as
organization president and facing these challenges head-on is a role easily adapted
by design professionals. "It's so perfectly analogous to what designers do," she says.
"Design is about humanity, you can't be a good designer without having an
understanding and appreciation of the human factor."
To celebrate the twentieth anniversary of IIDA and to look back on its legacy
so far, several past IIDA presidents sat down with Cheryl Durst to talk about the
organization's past, present and future.
