"We can map a cohesive brand experience for
people, from their first interaction on the internet,
all the way through built space and back out again,"
South says, noting that he's working on such a
project currently with a client in Atlanta. "With the
proliferation of the smart phone, we're all walking
around with super computers in our pockets.
It's allowing us to do things we've never been
able to do."

VIRTUA
Another current project of South's is an app that
allows users to provide real-time feedback on space.
As people leave a conference room, for example,
the app would text them with a series of questions.
Did the space meet their needs? Did the lighting
work, did the AV work, was there enough room for
everyone? It's an app that companies can roll out
to their employees to improve their understanding
of their space, and it adds yet another potential
service point for P+W.
South works with multiple design teams across
the New York office, coming in during the
charetting process at a project's inception to bring
a technology point of view. He says he likes to get
involved as early as possible with a project, so
that design teams understand that technology
shouldn't just be a component that's tacked onto
the end of the design process.

"I'm a big proponent of having the IT consultants
on at the beginning of the design process to make
it more seamless. Technology isn't here to freak
people out, it's supposed to help enhance the
human experience. When you walk through a
finished space you should feel like the technology
has a natural integration, like it's part of the
overall design."
It's an argument that sounds strangely familiar.
Five or ten years ago firms across the country
found themselves having similar conversations
about integrating sustainability into their design
process. Today, the designer who doesn't have
a solid understanding of sustainable principles
is at a distinct disadvantage.
