KIM

What are some of the
biggest differences
between the design
process in the US and
elsewhere?

In China you can incorporate more technologies from the start, which is
a freer process. You don't have the same demands on the concept and design documen-
tation phases. But one thing that's surprised me is how easy it is to communicate
with non-English speaking team members-the design itself allows us to be in sync.
It shows how design is not only functional, it's a beautiful refuge with
no language barriers.
JANCZYKOWSKA  I'll admit that it's been a challenge to accept the difference in how
bespoke design is valued in some places in Asia. The creative process in the US, as
well as in Australia and Europe, is very rigorous. I'm fortunate to work at a place that
only wants to create bespoke and interesting work, unfortunately that does not
seem to be the modus operandi of every company.
DELROSSO

I've found that the level of expectation from the client is very closely
connected to the culture of design that exists in each country. In Europe, clients are
more attuned to details because it's part of the culture. In the US, clients are more
concerned with timing, budget, and the "wow" factor-something visible and
striking that's immediately obvious. And companies in the US tend to be larger,
so you're often less connected to the owner of a project. Your relationship is with a
project manager or representative, which is very different-you're trying to solve
functionality to connect to the brand. In Italy, where I'm based, there are so many
family companies, the owner is very involved, they want to go to a showroom to see
materials and furniture, and they have lots of magazines and images of reference,
especially on residential developments.
