IIDA Perspective - Fall/Winter 2015 - 50

Working abroad, you're
exposed to a variety of
different cultural and
social influences.
Have you seen those
influences manifest in
the design process or
designs themselves?

As a team member
with an outside
perspective, what are
you able to bring to the
table that's distinct?

BALESTRAZZI Absolutely-take hospitality. In the UK, travelers expect a certain level
of service and formality. But Americans are more accustomed to doing things on
their own, and have become self-sufficient to a degree. They value time over service,
so for them, sometimes less interaction is preferred, like with check-in at a kiosk in a
hotel lobby. As designers, we often learn these things as we go-we come up with
ideas all the time, and then implement them and learn what works where by doing.
It's trial and error.

It can actually be hard to see cultural differences in projects nowadays
because of globalization, which has had a tendency to amalgamate design. It's a
little bit easier to see differences in residential projects, because there's an intimacy
with those spaces, they're very personal. In Italy, we find that clients are more
attuned to a bespoke approach. They say they're "working for the week and not the
weekend," and want offices that are more connected to the feeling of home. Soft
materials go a long way toward doing that, as well as daylight or areas for relaxation.

DELROSSO

The way my current firm collaborates with artists has changed my
way of thinking about design. We worked with British paper artist Richard Sweeney
on an installation in a plaza in Shenzhen, translating his paper sculpture into metal,
and essentially becoming an extension of his artist's studio. We've worked with
artists on everything from building facades to feature walls-it's completely
broadened my horizons about what's possible.

BALESTRAZZI Being the new kid is always a privileged perspective. I know my UK
colleagues appreciated what they felt was my uniquely "American" approach, which
to them meant questioning the why and how and challenging ourselves to find
unique and better solutions.

A US based education really teaches you to embrace critical and
creative thinking, and make those traits a core part of how you produce work. That's
something I've really come to value working abroad, and it's my most valuable
contribution to any team-the ability to bring that critical perspective.

KIM China is a largely authoritarian society-someone directs you and you follow
their direction. Sometimes my role is to inspire new thinking modes: "Don't just
follow that, question it." Sometimes through questioning the method, you can
actually find ways to create a more distinctive concept. A client or a design direction
may be limited for many reasons, oftentimes due to generational issues. But younger
designers can contribute a new point of view from their generation. That doesn't
complicate the process; it just adds value, and it brings more content to each phase.
I'm trying to help some of these young designers see that it's okay to contribute.
