BUD RODECKER

This issue's graphics-from the
custom typefaces to the high-concept
page layouts-were spearheaded
by Bud Rodecker of the Chicago-
based design collaborative Thirst.
Bud Rodecker is a principal designer
at Thirst and an adjunct professor
at DePaul University. His work
explores the space between logical
constraints and formal play, and
balances form with meaning. He is
interested in systems and processes
with the potential to create design.

Like many others who have seen the
musical "Hamilton" (which is as
great as they say), I rushed out to read
Ron Chernow's biography of the man,
which largely inspired the show.
Chernow's colorful portrait of
America's first Treasury Secretary,
who rose up from poverty in the
Caribbean to become a founding
father of the United States, nearly
dances off the page. It's made me
grateful I never tried to become a
popular historian, as now would be
the time when I might just give up.

I am fascinated with the evolution of
artificial intelligence in the
workplace and the impact it will
have on how we all work. Middle
management will be replaced by
middle mentorship and all of our jobs
will change ... for the better. The
reason why workplaces of today
won't exist in ten years' time is
because today's type of work simply
won't exist.

Recommended Read: "2015
Construction Technology Report"
from JBKnowledge
This yearly report breaks down
the influence, impact and trends
of technology within design
and construction, so we can see
where and how the industry is
innovating and pinpoint the areas
they are technologically neglecting.
A great read for any contractor
or technology company looking
for industry insights and perhaps,
competitive edge.

Recommended Read:
SPQR by Mary Beard
A fascinating re-examination of
the first millennium of the Roman
Empire that upends long-held
assumptions and illuminates the
lives of everyday individuals. It's
hard to read without reflecting on
how future generations will one day
interpret America's own excruciating
growing pains.
