The Social Movement

T

he most innovative trends of the future are being born out of today's obsession
with swiping, liking, and selfies, says MALIHA NISHAT, design director, Design
Worldwide Partnership, Dubai, United Arab Emirates. "In most industries, such
as in fashion and entertainment, fads and trends often seem to fizzle quickly," she
says. "However, when it comes to interior design, trends are long-lasting. [These trends]
dictate the market for decades at a time and evolve constantly, much like humankind."
But the developments we are witnessing now, aided by the emerging use of newer
techniques in design and materials, will take the industry on a drastic turn. They'll define
trends for the coming years, Nishat says.
"The touch screen, social media-driven, impetuous generation will dictate the 'new'
human experience," she says. "[They are] a fast-paced generation with the world at their
fingertips. And because of them, new styles and aesthetics are marking the development of
all aspects of human experience, with interior, industrial, and graphic design being a major
component. Human-centered design
is now taking on a whole new
form." -Alexis Holcombe

The Flexibility Factor

A

NDREW THOMAS, RIBA,
a partner at Grimshaw
Architects in London,
England, has spent the
bulk of his career focusing on transit projects,
including airports in the United Kingdom, Australia,
Germany, Russia, and Turkey.
It may take decades from the conception of these
projects to their completion. Designers in the field must keep
an eye to the future, expecting changes that may be disruptive
and difficult to predict, he says. That means creating adaptable
structures that can evolve over time to embrace new technology and
passenger demand. "The ideas of modular, loose fitting, lightweight,
and flexible buildings are always embedded in our vision," he says. Within
airport space, Thomas and his team seek to seamlessly combine
hospitality, leisure, and quiet spaces, he says.
To design for the future, designers must approach each
project with a clean slate. Thomas eschews preconceived
notions about what a building must look like, or any
elements required within, which helps him imagine and
create totally new spaces.
To help spur those new ideas, Grimshaw regularly
curates global workshops featuring experts from
all walks of life. His company has recently
hosted Oscar-winning visual effects designers
and experts who design the aerodynamic forms
of Formula 1 racing cars. "You have to stay engaged
with what's going on in the wider world and be able to
translate that into your work," Thomas says.
He also looks for this desire to stay relevant and
innovative in new designers. "We can teach them the design
tools," Thomas says, "but we can't teach passion." -SFG
