designers. Design competition happens today on a global scale-not only on a local level. As a
result, we have to be smarter, more flexible, and have a greater understanding of the world at large. 
This is difficult to do when you live in one place. There is so much information and so much
investment that's required to be relevant. Getting out of the studio, having experiences, and
responding to them rather than just reading about them is what makes us stronger designers.
PERSPECTIVE: How is hospitality design transforming?
PUSHELBERG: Real transformation often stems from social shifts. Understanding social shifts

leads us to reconsider the way we approach something.
The world of retail has transformed from fulfilling a practical buying-and-selling function to
one of creating experiences. Retail environments today are places to discover and understand
things. This notion is manifested through design.
Similarly, the way we use and design hotels is transforming: Dining, working, and entertaining
are all more casually fluid. Hotel lobbies are fulfilling a different purpose than they have in the
past. Hotel design today should respond to that social shift at every level of the market.
PERSPECTIVE: How is Airbnb changing consumer expectations and hospitality design?
PUSHELBERG: I don't know that Airbnb is changing consumer expectations insomuch as

it is responding to a shift that was already happening in the hospitality space. Travelers are
increasingly looking for more personal experiences. Airbnb is having the greatest impact on
hotels that don't respond to those desires.
As people spend more disposable income on experiences over things, the desire for
authenticity and a sense of place grows. Hospitality design responds to that desire as well, with
the added advantage of service and consistency across a brand. We guide our clients in creating
added value to the guest experience through design. -Alexis Holcombe
