The Workspace Evolution

to the more expressive styles we're seeing now. It may have to
do with economies, too-extravagant stairs are expensive."
But Frost is more convinced of social media's part in
pushing the feature's popularity. "Designers and clients
absorb social media, whether they know it or not," Frost
says. And his firm's creation for the Experimentarium is
certainly a darling du jour of social media and design blogs.
Paul Vanderheiden, IIDA, interior designer, The
Neenan Co., gets the dramatic draw of staircases. He
traces his infatuation with the element back to film
noir and stately monuments. But when clients request
statement-making staircases without a solid reason,
Vanderheiden says, designers must first decipher the
functionality of the feature. "Daylighting is a huge thing.
Openings between floors allow for better lighting and
more transparency," he says. "Then there's the health
and well-being aspect-employers these days want to
encourage taking the stairs."
In healthcare institutions, stairs are "a welcome mat
to interior lobbies," Vanderheiden says. "We recently
completed a couple of medical facilities in Vancouver
where instead of having traditional, separate, closed-in
waiting rooms, we designed open gallery spaces that
serve as one gigantic, communal waiting room. The
staircases are featured immediately upon entrance
and act as a sort of human highway to all the various
common spaces."

Furniture is getting smarter, thanks to designers and
manufacturers that are pushing companies to accommodate
the needs of their teams.
Herman Miller, for example, introduced its Live OS
system in August. Like the one found on your iPhone, it's
an operating system that makes furniture "smart." Live OS
furniture is equipped with sensors that feed data on the use
of the furniture into a cloud-based analytics network.
"The sit-to-stand desks allow, via the Live app, each user
to set personalized activity goals and height preferences
for easy one-touch adjustment," says Ryan Anderson,
director of commercialization and business development
for internet of things solutions, Herman Miller, Zeeland,
Michigan, USA. "The desks provide reminders through
haptic vibration and light as to when each user should sit or
stand to help him or her achieve their goal."
Technology isn't the only impetus for rethinking
the office furniture of the future, however. "Increasingly,
progressive organizations are embracing aspects of
co-working spaces and startup culture by creating
almost social-club-like atmospheres for their employees,
empowering them to shift seamlessly over the course of
a day from focused independent work to group-based
work and socializing," says Kylie Roth, senior director,
workplace research, Knoll, Chicago, Illinois, USA.
That's why many furniture makers, including Knoll, are
furiously developing customizable pieces. The company's
Rockwell Unscripted line, for example, includes a creative
wall that can hold whiteboards or corkboards and be
adjusted and arranged in various configurations, as well
as modular storage units that can easily be connected and
moved. "Today's workplace is no longer about individuals
carrying out individual tasks, but rather is a seamlessly
interconnected network of people, spaces, and technology
that together create an experience," Roth says.
Whatever the technology brings, the future of
furniture design is not a one-size-fits-all model, Roth
adds. "Allowing users to sit or stand, work in an activity
space or dining space, or put together an impromptu
collaborative space is key for companies concerned with
attraction and retention."

Virtual Reality is the Real Deal
Although virtual reality is best known for its influence on
the gaming and entertainment realm, the technology has
now become affordable and available enough to transform
industries outside of the usual suspects, including
interior design.
"Right now is the beginning of this trend," says Doug
Lovegren, associate principal at Svigals + Partners, New
Haven, Connecticut, USA. "Companies that aren't using
VR now will have to use it within the next year. It's a
no-brainer. You have to embrace these tools. And once the
word is out with clients, they're going to insist that you do."
